Chemical Safety

UNC Charlotte sets forth procedures, work practices and equipment intended to protect employees and students from the safety and health hazards presented by the laboratory workplace. The regulatory basis for Chemical Safety at UNC Charlotte is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard 1910.1450 - Occupational exposure to hazardous chemicals in laboratories. The goal of this Chemical Safety program on campus is to assure that all individuals at risk are adequately informed about the nature of work in the laboratory, the risks involved, and what to do if an accident occurs. Every laboratory worker should know the location and proper use of available protective apparel and equipment. Full-time personnel of the laboratory shall be trained in the proper use of emergency equipment and procedures. Such training as well as first aid instruction should be available to, and encouraged for, everyone who might have the need. Literature and consulting advice concerning Chemical Safety is readily available to researchers, laboratory personnel and students through the University Safety and Environmental Health Office at SEHOffice@uncc.edu or 7-4291.
